Friday The 13th will have a full micromoon
The Full Moon is a rare and beautiful sight because it appears fully illuminated from Earth. But while they are all called Full Moons, not all full moons are the same – some are called micromoons while others are called harvest moons.
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, a full moon at the peak of fall harvest season allows farmers to “work late into the night” because of the moon’s light. The micromoon is where the full moon is at the point in the moon’s orbit where it is at its greatest distance from Earth. Called the apogee, the full moon will appear smaller to people on Earth than when the moon is at its closest, aka a micromoon.
This month, on Friday the 13th exactly, a Harvey micromoon will give East Coasters a beautiful treat at around half past midnight as the moon will be bright and high in the night sky. Those living in the Pacific, Central, Mountain, and Alaskan time zones will witness the full moon just before midnight.
What makes this full moon even more special is the fact that it will occur on the spookiest of days — Friday the 13th. Full moons on this day are actually pretty rare. It previously happened on Oct. 13, 2000, and after this year, it won’t happen again until Aug. 13, 2049.
