Marvel Comic Universe welcomes back Spidey
There is no need to fear anymore; everything is back to normal for the Wall-Crawler.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have agreed to terms after a brief negotiation period. As many may recall, the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was in jeopardy back in August, as Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures could not agree on new terms for their partnership.
To recap, Sony owns the rights to the Spidey character but was loaning him to the MCU as Marvel got a cut of the profits from the Sony stand-alone films. However, after seeing how successful and popular the character was in the MCU, Marvel wanted a bigger slice of the pie, but Sony refused.
Thankfully, Sony and Marvel were able to overcome their financial differences as a joint press release revealed that a third Spider-Man film is being released on July 2021, and it will exist within the MCU world.
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Marvel president Kevin Feige said in a statement.
For those that have seen the previous Marvel films, especially “Avengers: Endgame” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Tom Holland’s iteration of the character had been built up as the heir apparent to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. So things would have been weird for both studios if a new agreement had not been reached and Sony took back all of Spider-Man.
