Celebrity Host Helps New College Students
As any parent and college kid knows, college is expensive: factor in the cost of tuition, plus books, plus food, plus dorms. It’s a figure that’s enough to make anybody’s head spin.
Talk show host, comedian, and game show host guru Steve Harvey has certainly made some incoming college freshmen very happy. Harvey has committed to covering the college costs for eight Kent State freshmen, which is the school the talk show host attended.
The news was announced via a Kent State University press release. Called The Steve Harvey Foundation, the university will provide scholarships of about $23,000 per student. The recipient will need to maintain a 2.5-grade point average for the scholarship to be renewed each semester.
Steve Harvey established the foundation in memory of Devin Moore, a Kent State University student from Cleveland, Ohio who died in 2017 while playing basketball. The scholarship comes at a time where many parents and students are raising concern and frustration over the rising costs of college attendance in the United States.
In addition to the student scholarship, The Steve Harvey Foundation committed $10,000 to Kent State’s Men Empowerment Network. In other college news, several contenders from the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination have promised and promoted plans to either reduce college costs or make college free altogether.
