LONDON – British grime artist Stormzy might be a MOBO winner with a Top 10 single that dominated the UK music scene last year – but he’s still not nominated for a Brit Award.
With the lack of diversity in the Oscar nominations a big issue this year, he’s tackling something much closer to home.
It was no shock that Adele, One Direction and Ed Sheeran dominated the Brits nominations. However, despite a really good year for artists such as Stormzy, Skepta and Krept and Konan, no black recording artists received a nomination in leading UK categories.
Only international artists such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd are up for awards.
Stormzy, who is not one to shy away from something that concerns him, recently criticised the Brits on his new track ‘One Take Freestyle’ and during a Radio 1 interview, according to NME.
The video shows the 22-year-old rapping about the Brits.
He says: “None of my Gs nominated for Brits / Are you taking the piss / Embarrassing.”
“Last year, they told the mandem that to be nominated you’ve gotta go on UK charts / So what do we do? We chart / Don’t come here with your lies, don’t start.”
When discussing the lack of representation in his Radio 1 interview, he said: “It was such a great year for grime and underground music. I thought maybe this year it might get celebrated.”
“You know when you’ve got that little bit of hope and that little bit of faith, and then they didn’t. I thought it was such a shame”.
