Every woman dreams of the perfect wedding and honeymoon with her husband-to-be, but for the most part, lavish weddings can cost a fortune. But for hundreds of Thai brides, this dream had the ability to become a reality, all with the help of some running sneakers, their groom and 3K run.
On Saturday, Nov. 24, more than 300 couples raced through Bangkok, Thailand competing for a lavish wedding and honeymoon trip in the annual 3 kilometer ‘Running of the Brides.’
The grand prize of a fully sponsored lavish wedding and honeymoon trips to the Maldives and Sapporo, Japan, is worth 2 million baht (roughly $60,400).
During the annual race, brides-to-be dress up in their wedding gowns to run the first 2 kilometers up and down a highway, before meeting up with their grooms — dressed in a suit — for a piggyback ride.
While there were hundreds of couples participating in the event, only one came out victorious. Hand-in-hand, the winning couple, Saisroy Songprasert, and her groom-to-be, Wasan Thatnamol, reached the finish line in 27.43 minutes. In an interview after winning the race, the two said they were “running for their lives.”
So next time if you’re in Thailand and are planning on getting married, have a pair of running sneakers on hand and grab your fiancé to participate in Bangkok’s annual “Running of the Brides” event.
