Mary Poppins is truly “practically perfect in every way” and the new trailer for Disney’s continuation of her story proves it. The official first trailer for “Mary Poppins Returns” delights in magic and whimsical nonsense and stars Emily Blunt as the famous nanny and Lin-Manuel Miranda. “Mary Poppins Returns” is the sequel to the 1964 classic that starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
The official trailer shows Poppins returning to Jane and Michael Banks, now played by Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw respectively, 25 years after the events of the first film. Jane is fighting for workers’ rights and Michael is a widow, raising his three children in the original house on Cherry Tree Lane, which they’re in danger of losing.
To help the Banks family heal, Mary Poppins drops back into their lives, with the help of Bert’s former protégé Jack (played by Lin-Manuel Miranda) and Topsy (played by Meryl Streep), Mary’s cousin who lives in a flip-flopped world of opposites.
Just like the style of the original “Mary Poppins,” the sequel features an animated sequence.
But Blunt and Streep aren’t the only big names in the film. It’s a star-studded cast — in addition to Colin Firth, Julie Walters and Angela Lansbury, the film also sees the return of Dick Van Dyke, playing the son of Mr. Dawes, a character he portrayed in the original movie.
“Mary Poppins Returns” comes out December 19.
