Fans Call For Star On Hollywood Walk Of Fame For Late “Star Wars” Legend
In a true friend move, Mark Hamill, one of the many stars of the famous Star Wars saga, started a campaign to convince the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to install a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that honors the late Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia. Reading just that, it is hard to think why Fisher doesn’t have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yet.
Fisher passed away in December 2016, and as a way of bringing the fans together to move the campaign along, Hamill made a post to Twitter, writing, “Carrie WILL get her well-deserved Star on the Walk of Fame, it’s only a matter of when. The rule is a 5-year wait when awarded posthumously. A letter to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce wouldn’t hurt, urging them to time it to the release of #EpIX #AlwaysWithUs.”
Although it is not uncommon for celebrities to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame after they have passed away, there is usually a five-year wait period between the time of a celebrity’s passing and the awarding of the star. Hamill’s campaign urges the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to make an exception to that rule because he (and many fans) believes that Fisher deserves to be honored.
Hamill received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just this year in March, and both Harrison Ford (who played Han Solo) and “Star Wars” creator George Lucas attended his ceremony.
