Harley Quinn is back
It’s finally Harley Quinn’s time to shine in the first look for DC’s movie “Birds of Prey.” The upcoming movie is a companion to Warner Bros.’ 2016 DC Comics film “Suicide Squad,” but focuses on some of DC’s female fatales and lacks a classic Mr. J.
The trailer lays the groundwork for Quinn’s emergence as a figure who makes her own rules and answers only to herself. The trailer opens with a voiceover explaining: “You know what a harlequin is?” Quinn asks in a disjointed cadence. “A harlequin’s role is to serve. It’s nothin’ without a master.” Harley Quinn is dealing with her breakup with Joker, her longtime lover and confidant. While seeking a fresh start, she quickly learns she isn’t “the only dame looking for emancipation.” Harley Quinn soon finds friends and together they take on Gotham City.
Harley (played by Margot Robbie) teams up with fellow superheroes Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), to save Cassandra Cain (one of several characters who takes on the role of Batgirl in the comics, and played by Ella Jay Basco) from Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), a ruthless crime lord.
Despite being tied to “Suicide Squad,” the previous movie’s major characters do not make an appearance. “Birds of Prey” is set to be released on Feb. 7, 2020.
