Trevor Noah responds to the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile: 'This is an American problem'

On Thursday’s The Daily Show, host Trevor Noah tackled police violence in light of the recent shooting deaths of two black men at the hands of officers.

His segment speaks to the assumption that if a person believes that black lives matter, then they must also be anti-police.

“The hardest part of having a conversation surrounding police shootings in America, it always feels like in America if you take a stand for something, you automatically are against something else,” Noah says. “… But with police shootings, it shouldn’t have to work that way.”

The segment also discusses the role of video in police violence.

“For some strange reason, when it comes to videos of police shootings, seeing isn’t believing,” Noah says.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, police shot and killed Alton Sterling outside of a convenience store on Tuesday. Less than 48 hours later a Minnesota police offer shot and killed Philando Castile during a traffic stop. Both shootings were captured on video.

Sterling and Castile are just the latest in a long string of African-Americans killed by police.

On Thursday night protests against police violence took place in cities around the U.S.. In Dallas, gunfire broke out at a protest against police violence, leaving five officers dead and seven injured.
