Y’know, I love cat videos as much as the next guy, but until recently, I never really understood what was so fascinating about them. Rather, I didn’t really get why watching cats be cats is so enrapturing. Recently, though, a couple of cats came into my life, and now I think I have a better idea. Speaking as someone who has never owned a cat prior, cats are weird, man. One of them is always chasing me around the room just so he can rub his head against my pants, and the other keeps sticking his head in the fridge every time I open it, to the point that I have to carry him out myself to avoid hurting him when I close the door. Maybe it’s just these particular cats, but I get the distinct impression they’re messing with me. Like, when I lift the second one up to get him away from the fridge, he doesn’t struggle or fuss, he just sits and stares at me, as if to say “you can keep moving me, but I’ll keep reappearing.”
But to loop back to my original point, I think cat videos are fun to watch not just because cats are cute, but because we feel a sort of unconscious desire to figure out their odd mannerisms. Or maybe that’s just me.
