Even though his return had not been made official, sources reveal to “Variety” that Warner Bros. may already be losing one of the film’s biggest stars for the next installment in the “Suicide Squad” franchise.
Will Smith, who played Deadshot in the original, is not expected to return for the studio’s upcoming sequel. Smith declined to return for the sequel with sources indicating that there were scheduling conflicts.
The film still has one of its other big stars, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, seeing how Robbie is currently at work on her own spinoff film, “Birds of Prey.”
The Suicide Squad will head into production this Fall with a release date set for Aug. 6, 2021. The film will be preceded by Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” which arrives six weeks earlier on June 25th, 2021.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” mastermind James Gunn will write and direct the film, which has been described as a “relaunch” as opposed to a “sequel.” In fact, past reports suggested Gunn has plans to go “in a new direction” with “a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Gunn joins Warner Bros/DC after being fired by Disney from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which came after old, controversial tweets resurfaced.
