Why they cut the Widow-Hulk romance from the ‘Avengers’
One major loose thread that fans are probably irked by is the romance between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Brue Banner/The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). The reason why the romance was cut was that “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” had so much plot to cover that certain story threads from the Marvel Cinematic Universe had to take a back seat.
As fans may recall, the two characters got close in 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and their feelings for each other were so strong that Natasha was able to calm down the Hulk’s rage. However, that romance didn’t last very long after the Hulk flew off into space and ended up teaming up with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok.”
Fans hoped that Bruce’s return to earth in “Infinity War” and his reunion with Natasha would resurface the fan-favorite storyline, but it never happened.
That is not to say that the actual scenes were not filmed. Co-writer Stephen McFeely said on recent episode of the Empire movie podcast that there were scenes that were hashed out and filmed, such as “‘You’ve been gone, I’ve moved on’” type of stuff, but because they were not crucial to the ‘A plot’ of Infinity War, the scenes did not survive.
That thing has to be on rails just to get to the finish line,” McFeely said. “You couldn’t wrap up loose threads just because you wanted to.”
So, in the end, all fans got was a suggestive look the Bruce and Natasha give each other when he shows up at Avengers headquarters after his return to earth.
