Girl's senior photo was removed from yearbook because she wore a tuxedo
High school senior Crystal Cumplido felt most comfortable in a tuxedo when she posed for her senior photos.
Fast forward to the end of the school year. Cumplido, a student at Lincoln High School in Stockton, California, was surprised to find that her picture was missing from the yearbook. In fact, in the listing of people in the student glossary, her name wasn’t even mentioned at all.
“It’s like I didn’t even exist in Lincoln,” she told Fox 40 News. “I was angry, I was frustrated. I just wanted to know why.”
When she tried to get answers from the school about the disappearance of her picture, the explanation was even more enraging.
“[The assistant vice principal] told me that I wasn’t following policy, that girls are supposed to wear the black, little shirt over whatever,” Cumplido said.
Superintendent of Lincoln Unified School District Tom Uslan has defended Cumplido’s choice of wardrobe and said that he is prepared to republish the school’s yearbook. “It was an inexcusable error that is inconsistent with our school district policies,” Uslan said.
