If it’s any consolation, ‘C’mon Margot Robbie, let’s go party’ sort of rhymes with “C’mon Barbie, let’s go party.” Margot Robbie is currently in talks to star in a Mattel-Warner Bros. Barbie movie after the toymaker acquired the rights to their brand back. Robbie will also likely serve as a producing partner.
In 2014, Mattel was working with Sony on the project and it was announced that Amy Schumer would star in the Barbie movie. However, Sony pushed the film’s release date from Aug. 8, 2018 to May 8, 2020 before Mattel and Warner Bros. took over the film’s development.
The developing Barbie film would grapple with the manufactured ideals put on women, and Schumer would play a doll living in Barbieland who is exiled for being imperfect. However, Schumer dropped out a few months later due to “scheduling conflicts.”
It was then reported that Anne Hathaway would play Barbie, but it ultimately didn’t work out either. It was also reported that Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins is in talks for directorial duties, although it’s too early to confirm if she will be attached to the project.
Margot Robbie seems like an ideal fit the role of Barbie as she has an obvious resemblance to the popular doll. Additionally, the actress already has a working relationship with Warner Bros with her continuing role as Harley Quinn. Following her appearance as the DC villainess in “Suicide Squad” in 2016, Robbie is set to reprise her role alongside some other femme fatales including Black Canary and Huntress in the upcoming “Birds of Prey.”
