National Geographic has teamed up with Mattel to bring children an inspirational new line of travel-themed Barbie dolls, with an emphasis on science and conservation careers, fields in which women are traditionally underrepresented.
National Geographic has long been known for its work in trying to encourage not just travel, but conservation, and this new line of dolls is a great way to encourage children to take an interest in the world around them.

Barbie, meanwhile, has been hard at work to show that they are encouraging positive role models, releasing dolls that include diverse body shapes and physical abilities. The new dolls that will be released are part of Mattel’s 2019 Barbie Fashionistas line, which aims to fight the stigma around physical disabilities. Barbie will debut a doll with a prosthetic leg and another that comes with a wheelchair.
National Geographic and Barbie will release their travel-themed line of dolls in the fall and will include dolls with travel and conservation careers including Polar Marine Biologist, Photojournalist, Astrophysicist, Wildlife Conservationist, and Entomologist (aka the Butterfly Scientist).
Each doll will come with the appropriate outfits and accessories for these roles, and the line will also include a special jet and helicopter for the dolls to fly to their work in.
