L’Oreal is changing the image of their brand
The world’s largest beauty company announced that it will stop using words like “whitening” and “fair” when describing its products. L’Oreal recently faced backlash when it made a post on Twitter saying the French cosmetics company “stands in solidarity with the Black community, and injustice of any kind.”
Amid the anti-racism protests and calls against racial inequality, people began accusing L’Oreal of hypocrisy. The company was also called out for dropping British model Munroe Bergdorf from its brand back in 2017 after she made comments about systemic racism.
Among those to criticize L’Oreal’s Twitter post was Bergdorf, who said that the cosmetics company “threw me to the wolves for speaking out about racism and white supremacy.” Bergdorf has since been rehired and is the UK company’s first transgender model who will join the diversity and inclusion, advisory board.
L’Oreal is one of many beauty brands that have implemented changes as pushback increases against controversial skin-lightening products. The companies have also been facing increased criticism for their lack of racial diversity in products and advertisements.
Words like “fair” and “whitening” were commonplace for most beauty brands, but now they are a cause for controversy and a label for the lack of inclusion.
