Just days after Amy Winehouse’s estate revealed plans for a hologram tour of the famous singer, her family also announced that a big-screen biopic about Winehouse is in the works. After the singer’s family strongly criticized the Oscar-winning 2015 documentary “Amy,” they agreed to executive-produce the upcoming film. Monumental Pictures’ Alison Owen and Debra Hayward will be producing the biopic while Geoff Deane is writing the script.
All proceeds from the film will go towards the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
“We now feel able to celebrate Amy’s extraordinary life and talent,” the singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, said in a statement. “And we know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues.”
Monumental Pictures also released a statement about their involvement with the upcoming biopic.
“We’re proud that Mitch Winehouse has entrusted us with the story of amazing Amy, an icon whose songs have provided the soundtrack to a generation,” Monumental Pictures said in a statement.
Amy Winehouse, an English singer and songwriter known for her deep, expressive vocals and eclectic mix of musical genres, was found dead in her home on July 23, 2011 due to alcohol poisoning. She has since been remembered as a legendary and beloved singer to many across the world.
A new documentary, “Back to Black,” is also set to arrive next month and will feature previously unseen footage of Amy and new interviews with her collaborators Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi.
