Not to say that many didn’t see this coming, but it doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
It seems things were moving a little to quickly, which took a toll on Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson because both have called it quits and called off their engagement just four months after announcing they were engaged.
Their love and engagement seemed like the greatest — and undoubtedly probably one of the most unexpected — love stories of 2018, but now that the engagement is off, fans are left wondering what they will do about their matching tattoos, and, more important, what will happen to the $93,000 pear-shaped diamond ring that Davidson bought for Grande.
While celebrities get together and break up all the time, this particular romance captivated people across the world for speed and intensity.
The 25-year-old pop star and the 24-year-old “Saturday Night Live” cast member first announced they were a couple back in May, but then shared their engagement just weeks later in June. Many people criticized the couple for moving fast, but for four months, the two persisted and kept their relationship in tact. While together, they regularly dedicated sweet remarks and loving comments to each other in their work.
Ariana Grande even dedicated and titled a song after Pete Davidson in her latest album “Sweetener,” and the two made a red carpet debut at the VMAs bask in August. The two adopted a pig together, moved into a $16 million apartment in New York together, and played out their love on social media with each other.
However, after Grande’s ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, passed away on Sept. 7, the pop star took a hiatus to regroup.
“Given the events of the past couple of years, Ariana is going to take some much needed time to heal and mend,” her team said in a statement in September. “She will be staying close to home and using this period to spend tie with her loved ones and work on new music without deadline.”
While the engagement may be off, the relationship hasn’t completely ended.
“Their engagement is off, but they still plan on spending time together,” a source close to Grande told PEOPLE. “It’s not like they split and never plan on seeing each other again. They just decided to slow things down.”
