Canada Is Working Towards Freeing The Whales
On Monday, Canada passed a bill making it illegal to hold dolphins, orcas and other types of whales in captivity. Violators could face fines of up to $150,000.
The bill is known as the “Free Willy” bill, named after the 1993 movie of the same title. The bill now faces “royal assent,” which means that either the governor general or deputies to the governor general would need to sign off on the bill.
It is expected to become law, but leading up to this point, it took several years to pass in the House of Commons after initially being introduced in 2015. The legislation aims to target anyone involved in holding the animals “for entertainment purposes” as well as bans the import and export of such animals. Violates would be penalized for owning or keeping a cetacean in captivity, breeding or impregnating a cetacean, or possessing or seeking to obtain reproductive materials of cetaceans, according to the bill.
Humane Canada tweeted out a message after the bill was passed on Monday. “Nothing fantastic ever happens in a hurry. But today we celebrate that we have ended the captivity and breeding of whales and dolphins. This is news to splash a fin at,” the tweet read.
