Disney is going big and bold for its upcoming streaming service! In preparation to launch its streaming service, Disney Play, Disney is enlisting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to develop TV shows. The ambitious plan is for a number of limited series that will center on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as Loki and the Scarlet Witch, along with other beloved superheroes who have yet to appear in their own standalone movies.
Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen will reportedly play the role of their movie characters, and the limited series will apparently be around six to eight episodes each. While this may not seem like a lot, it is still enough to give these characters more story space than what they previously had in other films.
However, Marvel’s biggest characters such as Iron Man and Captain America won’t be getting the same treatment. Disney’s new streaming service aims to put a spotlight on the smaller characters that the movies haven’t explored on a deeper level.
While the budgets of the series are expected to be hefty, rivaling those of major studio productions, Disney’s streaming service has been projected to cost subscribers “substantially” less than Netflix’s monthly fee.
This goes to show how much the company is riding on its direct-to-consumer platform. While Netflix and Amazon continue to grow their user base, Disney is trying to find a way to establish a firm grasp in the streaming revolution that is upending Hollywood.
