This Retirement Home Helps Senior Dogs Live Their Best Life
Do you just imagine a dog cracking open a beer and watching the sun go down? Well if beer for dogs is a thing, then so are retirement homes, and it’s the perfect place for older dogs to settle down and enjoy the rest of their days.
A new Missouri retirement home of sorts is giving homeless senior dogs that do not end up getting adopted from shelters a place to romp and roam. Called Shep’s Place Senior Dog Sanctuary, the canine retirement home opened about two weeks ago in Kansas City.
Founder Russell Clothier, a high school physics teacher, told local news WDAF-TV that he came up with the idea of the home after he started volunteering at shelters and how saw elderly dogs ended up after never finding a new home. He watched his older dogs “being overlooked,” which hurt his heart. He wanted the dogs to spend their “golden days in retirement” and give them the fur-ever home they deserved.
Clothier named the retirement home after his 10-year-old beagle-basset hound mix, who was also adopted. Shep’s Place Senior Dog Sanctuary currently has kennels for around 20 dogs and a large yard. Clothier said the sanctuary only accepts dogs that “fall through the cracks” and can’t find a home through a shelter.
