Face Masks Selling Out In Bangkok Due To Pollution Crisis

Four hundred thirty-seven schools in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, were shut for the rest of the week Wednesday due to increasing concern over dangerously unhealthy air pollution.

The Pollution Control Department said the amount of dangerous tiny “PM 2.5” particles has risen in all areas in and around Bangkok since Monday.

Police Gen. Asawin Kwanmuang, the city’s governor, declared Bangkok a “pollution control zone,” allowing authorities to take legal measures to combat the threat, including road closings and diversions.

Efforts to curb pollution include limits on diesel exhaust, outdoor burning and construction activities, and spraying water in the air.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of “Our Country, Our Future” exhibition, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha warned that if the smog in Bangkok was not effectively tackled, he would have an order issued by the NCPO prohibiting people from driving alone, ban the use of diesel cars and even implement road-space rationing to mitigate the crisis.

“The problem with PM2.5 is caused by multiple factors, so everyone needs to work together to tackle with these pollution factors and solve the problem at the root,” Prayut said.

The Public Health Ministry issued a warning, advising people to refrain from outdoor activities and exercise, and look instead for indoor venues. Many commuters and pedestrians have begun distributing and wearing face masks.
