Todd Phillips, the director of the upcoming “Joker” origin movie, shared new footage of Joaquin Phoenix as the criminal mastermind on Instagram. Labeled a “camera test” by Phillips, the clip ends with Phoenix’s Joker wearing clown makeup.
Warner Bros. indicated that the “Joker” origin movie would have a dark tone. The company said the film is an “exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

The footage of Phoenix’s image as the film’s title character comes amidst some slight disarray in the DC movie universe. Henry Cavill has stepped down from the role of Superman while DC is working on “Shazam!” Jared Leto is also slated to return as his tattooed, gold-toothed version of the Joker from Suicide Squad.
The upcoming stand-alone Joker movie has been rumored for months, but it won’t be connected to the universe-building DC movies. Instead, it’ll be more of an ’80s-set crime drama than a standard comic movie, suggesting that the origin story will start further back than fans have ever seen on the big screen.
“Joker” is slated to hit theaters in October 2019, but what’s a crime drama without a legend? The film also stars Robert De Niro as well Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron.
