Lyft Removes The Ability To Split Fare

In a move that’s sure to upset many customers and have them choosing Uber from now on, Lyft customers are no longer available to split fares with other passengers through the ride-sharing app.

Lyft abruptly announced that they removed the feature this week stating: “We wanted to give you a heads-up that you’re no longer able to split the fare for your ride in the Lyft app.”

A spokesperson for the ride-hailing company did not mention a reason for removing the feature, but said “easier and smoother ways to split your fare” are coming next year.

The Split Pay feature was added in 2014 and offered users an in-app method of splitting a fare with up to five people from the phone’s contact lists.

In light of this new move, many people have brought up how the timing of the split pay feature removal is odd. The holiday season is nearly upon us and is always full of travel to and from airports, train stations, and all sorts of social gatherings where groups are likely to ride together. Many were left wondering why Lyft didn’t decide to wait until after the holidays to remove its split fares feature.

While Lyft no longer has the Split Pay feature, Uber, Lyft’s direct competitor, still offers its own in-app fare-splitting feature.
