Arizona couple Matt Jacobi and Nick Caprio worked with Barbie-maker Mattel to create a same-sex couple Barbie set as part of their upcoming wedding. The couple was shopping for one of their nieces, who will be in the wedding, and decided to get her something wedding-related.
“We went online and we also went through Target and Walmart and were just searching and we found this awesome wedding set from Mattel and it was almost perfect,” Jacobi told 12News.
The couple purchased a second Ken doll to replace Barbie in the set, and it was from that moment that inspired the couple to reach out to Mattel. Matt posted the picture of the set they made on his social media and sent a message to Mattel saying, “I hope this inspires you.”
Mattel responded and requested the two come to Los Angeles to assist the company in creating a same-sex couple marriage doll set.
Now Care2, an online petition and activism site, has also jumped on the bandwagon by trying to collect 10,000 signatures to show Mattel that a same-sex Barbie Wedding set would find a consumer audience.
“What better way to teach kids that families are formed all kinds of ways than through the toys they play with,” the petition reads.
