It has been confirmed that Maroon 5 will be the halftime performer at the 2019 Super Bowl in Atlanta, and fans are in a tizzy. With a city rich in musical heritage, many people were wondering why an artist from Atlanta was not chosen to do the halftime show.
The NFL released a statement in response to the fans’ reaction. “It’s a Super Bowl tradition to speculate about the performers for the Pepsi Halftime Show,” a league rep said. “We are continuing to work with (longtime sponsor) Pepsi on our plans but do not have any announcements to make on what will be another epic show.”
Over the years, artists like Lady Gage, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Janet Jackson have all given memorable performances.
But the NFL has had a lot more to worry about than just booking a halftime performer. The NFL has faced a challenge this year due to its stance regarding former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick’s decision to take a knee during the National Anthem as a sign of protest spurred outrage in some quarters, from the president on down, and as a result, the quarterback has not played since the 2016 season. Additionally, another team has not picked up his contract.
