Women Seeking Change

Women in China are advancing like never before: educating themselves, becoming financially independent and establishing a much larger role for themselves in society. However, there is one thing holding them back and that’s becoming someone’s wife and mother.

That’s right; believe it or not women are still being forced into arranged marriages and looked down on if they are not chosen to be someone’s wife at China’s open-air-marriage market, which is a common sight in China, by the age of 27. At marriage markets parents go to post, compare and match personal ads, listing the height, weigh salary, values and personality of their sons and daughters. If they are not chosen they are considered Sheng Nu meaning leftover women. These markets are a clear symbol of the different views on marriage between two generations leading to pressure put on women by their families and society.

Despite living under pressure, these women have advanced and been able to achieve so much in their life and they are proud of it. They are smart, talented, and they are more than their marriage status. With that being said, these women are making it their mission to change the way society views marriage.
