The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926, a vintage brand of whisky that has earned names from whisky connoisseurs such as “Holy grail” and “Rolls Royce,” had a bottle sell at auction for a record-breaking £850,000. With current exchange rates, that translates to roughly $1.1 Million.
This whisky is special due to its age, with the whisky distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986, and a limited-edition bottle designed by the artist Valerio Adami. The price can reflect the rarity of this whisky, with only a dozen known bottles that are known of in the world (with two that are forever lost).
The two bottles are lost because one was damaged in an earthquake in Japan in 2011 and the other was enjoyed until the last drop. The last bottle of Macallan on auction sold in Hong Kong for the whopping price of $1,057,442.37 and was the previous record holder for the most expensive bottle of Scotch sold.
The seller picked it up back in 1994 for £4,000, so suffice to say, he got a pretty great deal. Thanks to this sale, the group that auctioned it, Bonhams, now holds the world record for the three most valuable whiskys ever sold.
