Woman Gives Birth To Three Babies
A woman in Bangladesh who gave birth in February suddenly gave birth again in March — to two more babies. Twenty-six days after Arifa Sultana, 20, had a premature baby last month, she was rushed to another hospital with stomach pain, the BBC reported. It was then that doctors realized she had the second uterus and was still pregnant with two other babies.
Sultana delivered her first baby at the Khulna Medical College Hospital in the Khulna district. Less than a month later, she went to the Ad-din Hospital in where Dr. Sheila Poddar performed an emergency C-section, the doctor told the BBC.
Dr. Poddar performed an ultrasound on Sultana and found out that she was carrying twin babies. Never having had an ultrasound before, Sultana had no idea that she had two other babies.
After carrying out the cesarean, Dr. Poddar delivered twins, one male, and one female. The babies are happy and healthy, according to the doctor.
The 20-year-old mother and her newborns were discharged on March 25 after four days in the hospital.
Since the news came out, many people have been wondering how it’s possible for one woman to have two wombs. A gynecologist in Singapore said uterus didelphys — the condition of having two uteruses – is “not as rare as people think.”
Uterus didelphys is a disorder in which the uterus starts out as two small tubes in a fetus and these normally join together to form one large organ. If they don’t, a double uterus may form. These abnormalities can cause fertility issues depending on the severity of the case.
