Kids Would Rather Be YouTubers Than Astronauts

To honor the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 Moon Landing in 1969, the LEGO Group today kicked off a month of worldwide events to inspire the next chapter of space exploration. The group also conducted a global survey among children aged eight to 12 years, and the results found that many were interested in space exploration, it was also found that being a YouTube star was a more sought-after profession than being an astronaut among kids in the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

In fact, children in the U.S. and the UK were three times as likely to want to be YouTubers or vloggers as astronauts. The survey, conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of LEGO, asked 3,000 kids to choose from five professions they wanted to be when they grew up: astronaut, musician, professional athlete, teacher, or vlogger/YouTuber.

Although the top choice among kids in the U.S. and UK was vlogger/YouTuber, 56% of kids in China said they wanted to be an astronaut.

Second to vlogger, 26 percent of American kids ranked teacher as their job of choice. Professional athlete came in at 23 percent and musician ranked at 19 percent. Being an astronaut was the least popular choice.

It still remains unclear, however, why kids in the West find space professions less interesting. But as a way of getting more kids open to the idea of space travel and to get them excited about space, Lego has partnered with Scholastic for an educational program that will send 50 children to NASA Space Camp in 2020.
