MacBooks won’t be the focus of Apple’s big “Gather Round” event, but thanks to rumors, many are speculating that Apple is working on a new, affordable laptop, that could appear at the event.
With Apple’s big September event, due this week on Sept. 12th, many are speculating that Tim Cook and his team will take the opportunity to launch an update to the MacBook Air at the event.
Previously, Apple launched ‘second tier’ products like the iPad or the MacBook in order to focus exclusively on the iPhone in September. But in the last few years, March reveals have focused on the iPad while MacBook launches have been removed from public facing events, instead being relegated to updates on the Apple website.
Many reports about the new device have labeled the new and upcoming device as a “revamped MacBook Air,” but many question whether the MacBook Air will remain the entry-level macOS laptop or whether it will strive to be a thinner, more powerful machine. There is also speculation that Apple will revamp the Air with a chip from Intel’s eighth-generation processor family that the company used on its recent MacBook Pro with Touch Bar models.
While it’s still unclear how Apple will refresh its notebook, there are several options Apple could take: The company could either keep the same MacBook Air branding or move the new notebook into the MacBook or MacBook Pro family and make it a lower cost option.
