‘Friends’ Is Officially Leaving Netflix

‘Friends’ fans are not happy

Aside from “The Office,” Netflix is losing another one of its crown jewels. After months of speculation, WarnerMedia — which owns the distribution rights to the beloved sitcom — confirmed that the series would be leaving Netflix in 2020. “Friends” will soon call HBO Max its new home, WarnerMedia’s own upcoming streaming service.

Once the series launched on HBO Max, all 236 episodes will only stream on that platform. The show will join a wide array of new and well-known shows, from “Pretty Little Liars” to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” HBO Max will also feature original series from film and TV veterans as well as access to HBO’s back catalog.

HBO Max will not be replacing its network’s other existing streaming services, HBO Go and HBO Now. Instead, this particular platform will offer up a “distinct” array of content with a goal of hosting hours of content from other WarnerMedia-owned networks, like Cartoon Network, CNN, and Turner Classic Movies.

Pricing for the upcoming service has yet to be announced. The revocation of Netflix’s license to the NBC sitcom comes at a huge loss for the streaming network but makes for a huge game changer in the ever evolving streaming wars.
