Canada’s newly-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is popular for many reasons. Videos of him performing strip tease, pulling off pranks and boxing have been doing the rounds in Canada and the United States for a while now. However, a video that captured Trudeau’s Bhangra moves has India falling head over heels for him.
Dressed in a white kurta-pyjama and stole, Trudeau shows off his dancing skills at an Indian Independence Day event by the Indo-Canada Association of Montreal in 2012. The video features a young Trudeau grooving to the beats of a Punjabi Bhangra song from the 2009 Bollywood movie Dil Bole Hadippa! And rather than being awkward, he matches every move that’s thrown at him effortlessly.
At 43, Trudeau is the second-youngest Prime Minister in Canada. He is known for being both accessible and likeable — soon after his victory, he visited a Montreal subway to personally greet commuters and take selfies with them.
Trudeau isn’t the only Canadian politician dancing to Indian tunes. Laureen Harper, wife of the outgoing Conservative leader Stephen Harper, had also danced to a Bollywood number during the campaign. Indo-Canadians form just under four percent of Canada’s population and have become a rising political force. Indian-origin candidates won a record 19 seats in the latest parliamentary elections, with 15 of them being elected from Trudeau’s Liberal Party.
