Reese Witherspoon assembles the best comedy writing team
Whether you liked the movie or not, “Legally Blonde” is still thriving, so much so that it looks like a third installment is in the works. Two years after Reese Witherspoon confirmed the sequel, work on “Legally Blonde 3” continues. But this time around, producers are after some fresh new insight for the film. That’s where Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor step in.
Kaling, who is known for her work on “The Office” and “Never Have I Ever,” along with “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-creator and “Parks and Recreation writer,” Goor, have signed on to write the script for the new “Legally Blonde” film. Other writers include Kirsten ‘Kiwi’ Smith and Karen McCullah.
Kaling and Goor joined the project in hopes of giving Elle Woods and the plot “an entirely new fresh spin.” The two previously worked together on the Kaling/Priyanka Chopra wedding comedy that was picked up by Universal in 2019.
Most of the film’s original creative team has returned for the threequel, while Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine is producing the film, alongside Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, president of Platt Productions.
Many fans are excited to see Elle Woods back on the big screen. The first “Legally Blonde” grossed $141 million worldwide, and its follow-up raked in $124 million at the global box office.
The storyline follows Elle as she heads to Harvard Law School after being dumped by her boyfriend. In the sequel, Elle shipped off to Washington D.C. to join the staff of a congresswoman in hopes of passing a bill to ban animal testing.
Witherspoon previously shared that the timing was right for a third film because “we’re talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women.”
