New web series on 'Veep' director's comedy network imagines office 'crying room'

LOS ANGELES — Ever wish there was a place at work where you could openly burst out into tears? A new web series called The Crying Room imagines one for you.

The new mini-series, which Mashable is debuting, consists of seven one-minute episodes.

It’s also the first video show from the new female-driven comedy website PYPO. Veep director and producer Stephanie Laing announced the launch of PYPO, which stands for “Put Your Pretty On,” in December. The website was “designed to engage, inspire and entertain.”

Laing wrote the series with Georgia Pritchett and Emilia Barrosse. It stars Cassidy Freeman as Abi, a new employee at a company who stumbles upon a room full of sobbing adults.

The idea stemmed from an article written by a contributor for the platform.

“Women are so compartmentalized and told to be so compartmentalized,” Laing told Mashable. “I was creatively attracted to this idea that there would be this crying room, like a conference room.”

The series was also in part an “homage” to the British sitcom The Smoking Room, which Laing called one of her favorite shows.

PYPO will continue to explore new themes and topics in its original content, including video series, comedic sketches, animation, articles and editorial collaborations.

“[The Crying Room] is very much the the beginning phase of things we will do on PYPO,” Laing said. “I knew there was a hole in the market, but I never knew there was this big of a hole — and that women would be so excited to jump into this playground.”

Episodes of The Crying Room are now available on YouTube.
