This couple is marriage and love goals!
John Henderson, 106, and Charlotte Curtis, 105, celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary on Dec. 15, solidifying their place in the Guinness World Record as the oldest living married couple. The two originally met in class at the University of Texas, Austin, in 1934.
In an interview with TODAY, John recalled the first time he saw his future wife, saying, “Charlotte looked over her shoulder and smiled and I knew I wanted to take her on a date.” While in school, John played football while Charlotte was studying to become a teacher. The two went on a date and…. well, the rest is history.
The Hendersons married in 1939 and credit their kindness as the key to their long and successful marriage. John said in an interview that it is important to not indicate to your partner that you’re going to be a leader or have things your way. “You have to give and take as life goes by, and be grateful for what you have,” he told Fox 61.
He also added that it is important too, as the Bible puts it, “[N]ot let the sun go down on your anger.” In other words, do not end the day with anger or bitterness in your heart. It is better to address the issue in a kind, understanding and loving manner, and to be aware of each other’s’ feelings.
The couple never had any children and currently, live at the Longhorn Village retirement community in Austin. Although they’ve “slowed down somewhat,” the two remain active and enjoy spending time together.
