Big changes are coming to a Dunkin Donuts near you. If the foam cups you regularly drink your morning coffee from have not already disappeared from your corner coffee shop, they are about to.
The styrofoam cups have already been replaced with new paper cups in many towns including Cambridge and Brookline in an effort to be eco-friendlier. By the end of this year, every store in Massachusetts will make the switch.
However, Dunkin’s newest paper cups aren’t the kind that can be recycled, unfortunately, like most paper cups, these new cups will need to be tossed out in the trash just like the foam ones. However, Dunkin’ Chief Operating Officer Scott Murphy, said that the biggest advantage is that the paper cups are made out of renewable resources.

Only the lids will be recyclable, which are also new and will be rolling out this year. The lids will include the number 5 inside, which is the recycle symbol.
Dunkin Donuts has been using foam cups for 20 years. Starbucks Coffee, which goes through about 6 billion cups a year, has also implemented changes of their own in an effort to go green, with some franchises getting rid of plastic straws and replacing them with paper ones.
