While New York City may be dropping a sparkling 11,875-pound Waterford Crystal ball in the heart of Times Square, over in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a 400-pound illuminated Peeps chick will help ring in the New Year.
Pennsylvania is home of Peeps manufacturer Just Born Quality Confections, and is the 10th anniversary of the Peeps chick drop, the headlining event of PeepsFest, which is a two-day, family-friendly festival celebrating the brand that takes place at SteelStacks, a former steel plant-turned-arts and entertainment district. The fiberglass Peeps chick stands four feet and nine inches tall, and is scheduled to make its descent on Dec. 31 at 5:15 p.m.
“The Peeps chick is an iconic symbol that represents the Peeps brand, our company and our community,” Meg Dowd, corporate affairs specialist at Just Born Quality Confections, said. “We look forward to celebrating with fans, some of who travel from all over the country, at PeepsFest!”
In addition to the New Year festivities, the brand is also launching a nationwide sweepstakes — Peeps Helping Peeps — supporting United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. The grand prize package includes a trip for four to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, an exclusive Peeps factory tour, and a $250 shopping spree to the Peeps & Company store.
