Off-the-grid living is in vogue these days, with many people quitting their jobs, disconnecting from technology and living off the land. It’s like being Amish, but without the stiff clothes and outdated gender roles. One man has made it his mission to not just live off the grid, but create his own off-the-grid community, all in the image a Tolkien-esque Hobbit village.
This guy, Evgeny, studied construction in school, but found the abundance of box shapes and concrete to be stifling. He wanted to build something more in line with his favorite fantasy novels, preferring clay and wood over metal and stone. He quit school and moved to the countryside where he built his very own Hobbit house.
The entire thing is made of natural materials, and apparently cost him less than $1,500 to build. Evgeny isn’t satisfied with just one house, though. He wants to build at least five or six more and create an entire community. In pursuit of this dream, Evgeny has offered an open invitation for anyone to come to his village and live there.
