The New Version Will Be A Hip-Hop Musical
Are you ready for another adaption of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”? There have been many stage shows and cinematic adaptions over the years (remember Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “Romeo + Juliet” starring a young Leonardo DiCaprio?) and much like the different version we have gotten, we are about to get another one with a very big twist.
A hip-hop musical version on “Romeo and Juliet” is currently in the works at Netflix with Will Smith and Queen Latifah set to produce.
The film is being described as a contemporary musical take on William Shakespeare’s tragedy, which will be set against the urban rhythms of New York. The love story will follow a young waitress from the streets of Brooklyn and an aspiring musician from a wealthy family, and much like the original story, their unconventional romance will force them to walk a difficult path.
Solvan “Slick” Naim, will direct from a script written with Dave Broome. Latifah and Shakim Compere will produce via their Flavor Unit Entertainment banner along with Broome and Yong Yam for 25/7 Productions. Smith will act as an executive producer under his Overbrook Entertainment, with James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett.
How do you feel about this version of the Shakespeare classic?
