Where’s The Beef?
Looks like a lot of grills will be missing their burgers due to a beef recall. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a recall for more than 62,000 pounds of raw beef due to E. coli concerns.
The tainted meat was packaged at the Aurora Packing Company, Inc. in Illinois on April 19 and was shipped out nationwide.
Meat products being recalled will have the establishment number “EST. 788” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Recalled products include cuts of steak like ribeyes, ribs and brisket cuts.
The possible E. coli contamination was discovered after a random sampling, and so far, 28 have been hospitalized. Reported illnesses came from consumers in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and Kentucky.
E.coli can be potentially deadly with bacteria that can cause symptoms including dehydration and abdominal cramps, two to eight days after exposure.
Although most patients recover within a week, others may develop kidney failure. The most common cases are found in children under five and older adults.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service warns consumers to practice food safety and discard impacted products. Recommended food safety practices include preparing raw meat products safely and only eating products cooked to a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
