Leave it to Queen to always make a lasting impact!
Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a biopic about Freddie Mercury’s rise to fame as the lead singer of Queen, opened this weekend to an estimated $50 million in domestic ticket sales. The movie also brought in about $72.5 million internationally, according to Fox, for a global total of about $122.5 million.
Although the film received a somewhat lackluster reception from critics, it holds a 60 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The release of “Bohemian Rhapsody” came after a long and troubled production, which took $52 million to make. Sacha Baron Cohen was originally slated to play Mercury before dropping out in 2013, and Dexter Fletcher replaced the movie’s original credited director, Bryan Singer, late in the production.
But despite the hardships and lackluster reviews, one thing still proves to be true: audiences still love Queen. Audiences were interested in Mercury’s story and the band’s overall rise to fame.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” beat out the No. 2 finisher, Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” a holiday retelling of the E.T.A. Hoffmann story, which also opened this weekend.
Despite a celebrity cast featuring Mackenzie Foy, Keira Knightley, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren, the film only brought in an estimated $20 million, disappointing results for a Disney film that spent well over $100 million to produce.
