Step aside Batman because there’s a new superwoman in town! The CW has unveiled a first look at Ruby Rose in the Colleen Atwood-designed Batwoman supersuit — and it looks very comic book accurate. The suit is complete with the Bat-symbol, the cape, and, of course, Kate Kane’s patented red hair.
It was reported awhile back that Ruby Rose, star of “Orange is the New Black” would make her debut as the popular Gotham City hero in this year’s three-night Arrowverse crossover “Elseworlds,” which will include “Arrow,” “The Flash,” and “Supergirl.”
Details are still scarce, but we do know that Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), and the Flash (Grant Gustin) will travel to Gotham City because of the machinations of Dr. John Deegan, a possibly insane Arkham Asylum doctor played by Jeremy Davies of “Lost.”
But more than that, Rose will also headline her own Batwoman series. The CW network is currently developing a stand-alone series around the character, and will involve a modern incarnation of Batwoman.
Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, debuted in 2006 and was one of DC Comics’ first openly gay characters, making her an important and influential character. Rose will certainly make a similar splash if the show gets picked up to series because she will lead the first TV series that focuses on an LGBTQ superhero.
