Marie Kondo And Netflix’s “Tidying Up” Sparks Thrift Store Donations

If you’re a person who loves to go thrifting, then you can probably thank Marie Kondo for your next treasure find. The Japanese organizing guru and star of Netflix’s new series, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo,” has been fueling resolutions to declutter.

Neat freaks and fans that were inspired by the show have been uploading pictures of organized spice cabinets, junk drawer redos and neatly folded t-shirts and socks on social media.

It’s no secrets that Americans accumulate a lot of stuff, so with so much purging, all that unwanted clutter and clothing has to go somewhere. And that’s where thrift and consignment shops across the nation are reporting an increase in donations.

The Goodwill of Greater Washington told the Washington Post it has experienced a 66 percent bump over last year for the first week in January. Its Gaithersburg location witnessed a whopping 372 percent increase. In Chicago, Ravenswood Used Books posted it had received a month’s worth of books in two days.

“Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” is an eight-part series that follows the petite Kondo as she enters people’s homes to help organize following the “KonMari method.” The show is a spinoff of her 2014 bestselling book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.”
