How much do you like mayonnaise? Do you really, really like it?
Maybe you do or maybe you don’t, but one thing is for sure, the Japanese love mayonnaise. So much so, that mayonnaise is taken super seriously. The egg-based dressing is used on a whole host of foodstuffs, but the condiment has been upgraded to a whole new level: ice cream.
Japan is home to a whole host of unique and regional varieties such as the world’s most intense green tea ice cream to squid ink ice cream. But the newest flavor to captivate audiences is Japanese sweets and snacks maker Morinaga’s latest concoction. Branded as “Calorie Monster” – because it clocks in at 307 calories – the mayonnaise flavored ice cream bars are described as a “forbidden meeting” of flavors.
The new release is in celebration of the 35th anniversary of Cheerio, Morinaga’s long-selling popular ice cream bars. The bar’s core is white chocolate with a mayonnaise-flavored ice cream filling in the center, which is then coated with a mix of more white chocolate and cookie bits.
While this may sound vile to many, it’s important to note that Japanese mayo is distinctly different from the mayo we use to dip our fries and top our burgers with.
Japanese mayonnaise doesn’t add water and uses egg yolks and apple or rice vinegar. As a result, it is often described as richer and sweeter than its American counterpart.
Morinaga actually describes its bar’s flavor as a “sweet and creamy deliciousness that has yet to be experienced.”
Would you ever try the Calorie Monster?
