Apple plans to get rid of iTunes and replace it with 3 other apps
Apple has decided to stop updating the 18-year old iTunes service.
“Users will have access to their entire music library, whether they downloaded the songs, purchased them or ripped them from a CD,” Apple said in a press release.
As part of the new change coming this fall, iTunes will split into three separate media streaming apps: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple TV. The new Music app will be “fast, fun and easy” and will contain over 50 million songs, playlists, and music videos. Users will also still be able to purchase music via the iTunes music store.
The move comes with Apple shifting its focus to better increase its ability to create premium experiences that keep loyal users invested.
Back in its heyday, iTunes was one of Apple’s first major successes in this area. It was initially focused on burning and mixing songs on the Mac.
But as times have changed and the way people listen to music has changed, Apple is now hoping that Apple Music will pick up where iTunes left off. Users have been worried that all of their past music would disappear into oblivion, but Apple has assured them that every song that has ever been bought, ripped, uploaded or imported will automatically be part of Apple Music.
