‘The Princess Bride’ Goes To Broadway
It’s no secret that Disney’s “The Princess Bride” has been flirting with Broadway for years, but now, it seems that dream might eventually become a reality as a new creative team has stepped on board: composer and lyricist David Yazbek and a book writers Bob Martin and Rick Elice.
Disney Theatrical Productions confirmed that the team has been recruited, but few other details such as when, where, who else, were planned about a stage adaptation for the 1987 Rob Reiner movie.
Yazbek is a Tony winner for “The Band’s Visit,” the Broadway hit, which is nearing its closing date on April 7, and “Tootsie,” which is currently in previews at Broadway’s Marquis for an April 23 opening. Both Martin and Elice also have shows currently on Broadway: Martin’s “The Prom” and Elice’s “The Cher Show.”
Princess Bride screenwriter, the late William Goldman, had initially teamed up with The Light in the Piazza’s Adam Guettel on an adaptation, though the two parted ways in 2007.
“The Princess Bride” is a romantic fantasy that follows the exploits of Westley, a farmer who — alongside a cast of eccentric companions — sets out to rescue his beloved Princess Buttercup from the brash prince she is forced to wed.
In more news for Disney Theatrical Productions, Disney is also at work on a stage adaptation of the animated movie “Hercules,” in collaboration with the Public Theater. The musical will run Aug. 31 through Sep. 8 at the Public’s Delcaorte Theater in Central Park.
