Not all heroes wear capes

To honor five people on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, American Girl is dedicating a collection of dolls. The Mattel doll line asked children across the country to nominate an outstanding hero in their life as part of its Heroes with Heart contest.

The contest is designed to thank and honor those who have risked their lives amid the pandemic. The winners will get the American Girl doll treatment—a one-of-a-kind, custom-made doll, and outfit in their hero’s likeness. The nominator will also receive a $200 American Girl gift card.

More than one thousand nominations featuring the most moving stories were submitted, a spokesperson said. “Our criteria points of originality, being heartfelt in nature and fitting the contest theme helped us narrow it down.” Laurent, a pilot for Spirit Airlines. His daughter nominated him for flying American doctors to Haiti to help fight COVID-19 and returning with a plane full of stranded U.S. citizens.

April O’Quinn, a paramedic working in Virginia with more than 15 years of experience. She ended up contracting coronavirus, and her niece nominated her because when she was healed, she went right back to work.

Xavier, a 17-year-old who was nominated by his little sister for working at a grocery store five days a week and still finding time to spend with her. Pam, a teacher nominated by her students.

Pam personally went to each students’ home and brought them a bag of books when schools shut down at the start of the pandemic. Sarah, a nurse assistant. She was nominated by her granddaughter for her dedication as a caregiver but also for feeding the homeless in her community.

Currently, the dolls are not for sale.
