Coffee Grounds Found To Be A Sustainable Resource
Two Scottish entrepreneurs, Scott Kennedy and Fergus Moore, said they have come up with a unique way to extract oil from used coffee grounds as an aim to go global with replacing palm oil. Palm oil is a substance found in many household products, however, extracting palm oil has been devastating for rainforests in Asia.
As a result of the declining ecosystem, manufacturers have been pressured to find an alternative.
Kennedy and Moore came up with their idea after seeing just how much food goes to waste in the hospitality industry. Having worked in coffee shops during their time at university, Moore told BBC radio’s “Good Morning Scotland” that about 60 percent of waste was coffee grounds.
But the reason why coffee grounds could be an alternative for palm oil is that there are oils contained in coffee that can have a wide range of uses in different industries. More importantly, though, the oils found in coffee grounds have the same components as palm. The issue would be extracting and purifying the oils.
Despite not having a background in engineering, the two business partners have been seeking advisers and mentors, and now their company, called Revive Eco is currently in the running for a share of £776,000 (about $ 1,002,444) funding in the Chivas Venture competition.
