Joaquin Phoenix Shows Off His New Role Of The Joker
If you’re a fan of the DC villain then Joker’s teaser promises an origin story for Batman’s most famous nemesis. There have been many Jokers on big screen history, but rarely do they glean much about their background. The only background information given on Jack Nicholson’s Jack Napier prior to his transformation into the clown prince of Gotham in 1989’s Batman was that he was a second-rate gangster with a weakness for blondes.
Heath Ledger’s version in 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” was more of an emotionally complex bad guy, who merely teased fans about the true horror behind his facial scars.
Jared Leto was the next to take on the iconic role of the Joker, which didn’t work out quite so well as everyone expected. But now Joaquin Phoenix has stepped into the role in a movie that may not even feature Batman at all.
The first trailer for “Joker, “which dropped this week, is set to Jimmy Durante’s “Smile,” and shows Joaquin Phoenix’s character’s transformation from a momma’s boy to the Clown Prince of Crime as it gets “crazier out there.”
“I used to think that my life was a tragedy,” Arthur says. “But now I realize … it’s a comedy.”
The movie, written by Phillips and Scott Silver, also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Marc Maron. “Joker” will be released in theaters on Oct. 4.
